Governance of a Church School

Introduction

In 2011 approximately one million children attend Church schools. Governors of Church Schools need to know why their schools are different, and recognise the specific additional role they have.

This module will give you a better understanding of your responsibilities, and the reasons why they are important.

When you have completed it you will:

  • know more about the history and key characteristics of Church schools;

  • have a better awareness of the Christian distinctiveness of Church schools;

  • recognise the strategic responsibilities involved in Church school governance;

  • understand the difference between Ofsted inspections and the Section 48 inspection process.

You should allow approximately 45 minutes to work through the module. Some activities have been built into the module, which, if you wish, you may undertake either by visiting the school or by initiating a discussion at a meeting of the governing body. At the end of the module there is a learning review, which will help you to consolidate what you have learned.
