Collective Worship

All maintained schools are required to provide a daily act of collective worship. The precise nature of the worship depends on the religious character of the school and the age and ability of the pupils. In most schools it is a discrete part of a daily assembly. Church schools have a responsibility for supporting the spiritual development of children and young people. In consultation with the Headteacher the governing body of a voluntary or foundation school is legally responsible for putting in place a policy for collective worship, and for ensuring that a daily act of worship takes place. It should be in accordance with the school's Trust Deed, or, where one does not exist, reflect the traditions of the Church the school represents.

Church schools should:

  • provide an act of Christian worship every day;

  • support children’s understanding of prayer and of the prescribed form of worship in their church (respecting those of other faiths who may not be able take part in this);

  • observe the major Christian festivals and, in schools where other faiths are present, ensure that those faiths are able and encouraged to celebrate their major religious festivals.

Inspection will judge the impact of Collective Worship on the school community
