Teaching of Religious Education (RE)
The teaching of RE is a statutory requirement at Key Stages 1 – 4. The school must ensure that it is given its required share of the teaching timetable, currently 5%, and the Headteacher and governors should monitor the content and quality of the teaching.
The syllabus used varies with the category of school:

VA schools with a religious character provide RE in accordance with the school’s Trust Deed, or if this is not specified, according to the religious designation of the school;

VC and Foundation schools must follow the syllabus agreed by the LA, which follows advice from the local Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).

Academies will agree their RE syllabus with the Department for Education (DfE). Inspection will judge the effectiveness of the RE teaching in the school.
