Understanding Schools Finance

This module provides a broad overview of the current systems for funding the majority of schools in England.  It will provide you with information on:

  • how LAs are funded for schools

  • how schools are funded

  • good fi nancial management practice

  • the benefi ts of delegations to schools

  • the role of the schools forum

  • additional sources of funding

  • the budget share formula

  • setting schools budgets

  • medium term fi nancial planning

  • levels of school balances – good practice

The government has announced its intention to change the way that some schools may be funded. This module will be regularly reviewed to reflect these changes as they are implemented. We also recommend thatyou look at the Schools Financial Value Statement Learning Module.
